Introduction

This book will make a distinctive contribution to sustainable agriculture by providing a comprehensive overview of the integration of computational technologies, including the Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning (ML), Blockchain, Fog Computing, and Federated Learning. It will explore how emerging technologies can tackle significant challenges in modern agriculture through intelligent data aggregation, predictive analytics, and decentralized management systems. It will demonstrate how digital change can facilitate Agriculture 5.0, instilling optimism and confidence in the future of sustainable farming. So, this Book will surely serve as a significant resource that empowers scholars, policymakers, and practitioners with the knowledge and tools to enhance sustainable agriculture through innovative digital solutions. It evaluates the efficacy of various digital initiatives.

Objective

The primary objective of the book is to provide a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and forward-looking resource that integrates sustainability objectives with intelligent computational frameworks in contemporary agriculture. Despite the expanding literature on individual technologies, such as IoT, Artificial Intelligence, and Blockchain, a significant deficiency exists in a cohesive reference that connects these technologies under a unified framework of Agriculture 5.0 — a paradigm that prioritises climate resilience, environmental stewardship, and digital innovation. The book aims to: • Connect theoretical sustainability frameworks with real technology applications, offering a systematic route for academics, educators, and practitioners. • Address practical challenges encountered by the agricultural industry, including data fragmentation, limited trust in digital technologies, and suboptimal energy consumption, by developing intelligent, secure, and energy-efficient solutions. • Accompany faculty and students researching the topic of digital technology's impact on agriculture in the context of sustainable transformation.

Target Audience

This book addresses these gaps by: • Providing a comprehensive framework of Agriculture 5.0 that merges sustainability goals with intelligent computational models. • Explaining practical architectures using cloud–edge computing, federated learning, and digital twins for decision-making in real-world agricultural systems. • Discussing ethical, environmental, and policy aspects to help readers apply these technologies responsibly and sustainably. By doing so, it serves both academic learners and professionals seeking to translate research into practice for climate-resilient and sustainable agriculture. 1. Integrated Multi-Technology Perspective: Offers a unified view of Agriculture 5.0 by combining sustainability, energy efficiency, and intelligent computational models — bridging the gap between theory and practice. 2. Real-World Applicability and Case Studies: Includes global examples, simulation frameworks, and implementation strategies for smart farming, making it directly relevant to R&D, policymaking, and teaching. 3. Future-Ready Insights: Addresses emerging topics such as federated learning, edge intelligence, renewable-powered IoT, and blockchain-based governance — equipping readers for next-generation agricultural research and innovation. The book empowers its readers to design, evaluate, and implement sustainable agricultural ecosystems that are intelligent, secure, and adaptive to climate and resource constraints.
