Introduction

Physical Education and Sports Science occupy a vital place in contemporary educational systems, yet the curricular foundations that undergird these fields often receive less scholarly attention than their pedagogical and performance-oriented dimensions. This edited volume addresses that gap by bringing together original research and scholarly inquiry focused on the development, design, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum in Physical Education and Sports Science across educational levels, from primary and secondary schools to higher education institutions and teacher preparation programs. The volume explores how contemporary curricula in these fields are being shaped by changing educational priorities, including inclusivity, learner-centered pedagogy, health promotion, cultural relevance, technological integration, sustainability, and competency-based learning. This publication seeks to provide a comprehensive and scholarly treatment of curriculum as both a theoretical and practical concern, examining how Physical Education and Sports Science can remain responsive to evolving societal, institutional, and learner needs by bringing together international and multidisciplinary perspectives.

Objective

This book aims to serve as a comprehensive scholarly reference on curriculum in Physical Education and Sports Science, consolidating current thinking on curriculum reform, innovation, and alignment while identifying challenges, gaps, and opportunities for future inquiry. The publication is expected to make a meaningful contribution to the research community by offering an organized body of knowledge on a topic that remains highly important yet often dispersed across isolated studies, institutional practices, and policy discussions. The volume seeks to support the development of stronger theoretical frameworks, more context-sensitive curricular models, and more evidence-informed approaches to teaching and program design by covering a broad range of educational contexts and curricular issues. It is also expected to stimulate dialogue among researchers, educators, curriculum developers, and policy stakeholders regarding how curricula in Physical Education and Sports Science can better address issues of quality, relevance, equity, and lifelong engagement in movement, sport, and wellness.

Target Audience

The intended audience of this publication includes researchers, faculty members, teacher educators, graduate students, curriculum specialists, school leaders, and policy developers working in Physical Education, Sports Science, K–12 education, higher education, and related disciplines. It will also be useful to practitioners involved in curriculum planning, instructional design, program review, and educational reform in both school-based and university-based settings. Because the book addresses curriculum across educational levels and learning contexts, it is expected to appeal to a broad readership seeking both conceptual guidance and practical insights for improving Physical Education and Sports Science education.
