Introduction

The rapid advancement of generative artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming educational practices across disciplines, reshaping how learners engage with knowledge, educators design instruction, and institutions conceptualize assessment and academic integrity. In this evolving landscape, learner autonomy emerges as a critical construct for enabling meaningful and responsible human–AI collaboration. This forthcoming volume aims to explore how learner autonomy can be effectively supported and redefined in AI-enhanced learning environments. It seeks contributions that critically examine the pedagogical, technological, and ethical dimensions of AI integration, with a particular focus on empowering learners as active, self-regulated participants in the learning process. We welcome contributions including empirical studies, pedagogical innovations, and practice-based insights.

Objective

The primary objective of this edited volume is to provide a comprehensive and forward-looking examination of the intersection between learner autonomy and human–AI collaboration in modern education. The book aims to: • Advance theoretical frameworks that conceptualize autonomy in AI-mediated learning • Present empirical research and innovative practices across educational contexts • Examine ethical, governance, and policy considerations associated with AI use • Highlight discipline-specific applications, particularly in language and STEAM education

Target Audience

This book is intended for a wide range of audiences, including: • Researchers and scholars in applied linguistics, education, and educational technology • University and school educators integrating AI into teaching and assessment • Instructional designers and curriculum developers • Policy makers and institutional leaders concerned with AI governance in education • Graduate students exploring AI-supported learning and pedagogy

Recommended Topics

Authors are invited to submit chapters addressing (but not limited to) the following themes: • AI-supported learner autonomy and self-regulated learning Investigations into how AI tools facilitate learner agency, metacognition, and independent learning practices. • Generative AI in teaching, learning, and assessment Applications of generative AI in instructional design, student engagement, and innovative assessment strategies. • Human–AI collaboration in classroom practice Pedagogical models, classroom-based research, and case studies demonstrating collaborative learning with AI. • Automated feedback, personalization, and adaptive learning AI-driven approaches to formative feedback, adaptive learning systems, and personalized instructional pathways. • Ethical responsibilities, governance, and collaboration Issues related to academic integrity, data privacy, transparency, and responsible AI adoption in educational contexts. • Generative AI applications in the disciplines: Language and STEAM education Discipline-specific studies exploring AI integration in language learning and STEAM fields (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics).
