Introduction

Throughout history, societies have attempted to regulate ideas, behaviors, and cultural practices deemed controversial, immoral, dangerous, or socially undesirable. From banned books and censorship campaigns to controversial leisure activities, ritual practices, gambling cultures, underground communities, body modification, and digital subcultures, debates over what is considered acceptable or deviant continue to shape contemporary social life. These practices often reflect broader struggles over power, morality, identity, freedom of expression, cultural heritage, and social control. Banned Literature and Deviant Leisure in Contemporary Society explores the complex intersections of censorship, intellectual freedom, cultural resistance, social regulation, and transgressive leisure. Bringing together scholars from diverse disciplines and geographical contexts, the volume seeks to examine how individuals, communities, institutions, and governments negotiate the boundaries of acceptable knowledge, culture, and leisure in an increasingly interconnected world.
