Introduction

In recent decades, technological advances have profoundly transformed the way mental health care is conceptualized, delivered, and evaluated. The growth of digital psychological interventions—including mobile applications, online platforms, artificial intelligence–based programs, telepsychology, and guided digital therapies—has created new opportunities to expand access to evidence-based treatments, reduce health inequalities, and promote preventive and therapeutic interventions across diverse sociocultural contexts. However, although digital interventions have demonstrated increasing effectiveness across a range of psychological disorders and emotional conditions, significant challenges remain regarding the adaptation of these approaches throughout the lifespan. Children, adolescents, adults, and older adults have distinct psychological (cognitive and emotional), social, and technological needs, requiring personalized models that are sensitive to the characteristics of each stage of human development. The book Lifespan Approaches to Evidence-Based Digital Psychological Interventions offers a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and up-to-date analysis of how evidence-based digital psychological interventions can be developed, implemented, and evaluated while taking into account the specificities of each phase of life. The volume brings together contributions from clinical psychology, health psychology, developmental psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience, public health, data science, and digital health technologies, providing a critical and applied perspective on the future of digital psychological care and intervention.

Objective

This book aims to achieve four main objectives: To systematize current scientific knowledge on evidence-based digital psychological interventions across the lifespan; To critically examine the methodological, ethical, and clinical challenges associated with implementing these technologies in different populations; To promote integrative and personalized models of digital mental health care, taking into account developmental, cultural, and contextual factors; To stimulate new research agendas and clinical innovations, particularly in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, adaptive and integrative interventions, digital mental health promotion, and the digital prevention of psychological disorders. The book’s primary contribution to advancing current research lies in its integration of the human developmental perspective with evidence-based practice in digital mental health care. Although numerous publications address digital mental health, few systematically examine the differences and specific needs associated with the various stages of life. This volume therefore offers an innovative conceptual framework that connects psychological development, technology, and evidence-based clinical practice. In addition, the book contributes to: expanding discussions on accessibility, digital inclusion, and equity in mental health care; strengthening hybrid models of psychological care; informing public policies and digital clinical practices; encouraging multicultural and longitudinally oriented research; fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers, clinicians, and digital health technology developers

This book is primarily intended for: researchers in psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience, and digital health; clinical practitioners interested in digital psychological interventions; undergraduate, master's, doctoral, and postgraduate students in mental health and behavioral sciences; public health policymakers; specialists in health technology; developers of digital mental health platforms and applications. In addition to this academic and professional audience, the book may also benefit: public and private healthcare organizations; educational institutions; primary care professionals; multidisciplinary healthcare teams; mental health technology startups and companies; international organizations interested in expanding global access to effective psychological interventions.
