Introduction

This edited volume brings together international scholars and practitioners to examine the growing use of dark patterns and persuasive UX design in digital marketing environments. Moving beyond general discussions of consumer behavior, the book focuses specifically on how interface design, algorithmic targeting, and behavioral nudging are used to manipulate user decision-making across digital platforms.

Objective

The volume adopts a global comparative perspective, featuring contributions from Southeast Asia, Europe, North America, and emerging economies to highlight how dark patterns manifest across different regulatory, cultural, and technological contexts. By integrating insights from consumer psychology, behavioral economics, human and computer interaction (HCI), and digital ethics, the book addresses critical issues such as: a) Deceptive design practices in e-commerce and social media b) Consent manipulation and data privacy exploitation c) Addictive interface features and attention capture d) Consumer vulnerability and digital well-being

Submission Procedure

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before July 22, 2026, a chapter proposal of 1,000 to 2,000 words clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors will be notified by August 5, 2026 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines.Full chapters of a minimum of 10,000 words (word count includes references and related readings) are expected to be submitted by November 4, 2026, and all interested authors must consult the guidelines for manuscript submissions at https://www.igi-global.com/publish/contributor-resources/before-you-write/ prior to submission. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-anonymized review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.

Note: There are no submission or acceptance fees for manuscripts submitted to this book publication, Dark Patterns and Ethical User Experience Design in Digital Marketing. All manuscripts are accepted based on a double-anonymized peer review editorial process.
