Introduction

Intelligent Software Systems (ISS) is a modern form of software engineering and the advanced technologies of Artificial Intelligence (AI) like Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL), Natural Language Processing (NLP), Generative AI, Computer Vision (CV) and autonomous agents. These systems can analyze data, recognize patterns, learn from experience, and continuously improve their performance. Additionally, the rapid growth of AI technologies and the recent advancements in cloud computing, edge computing, Internet of Things (IoT) and big data analytics have further expanded the capabilities of these systems. The integration of AI technologies into software systems has significantly enhanced user experiences, operational efficiency, and business competitiveness. This is a reason; the organizations are relying on intelligent software systems. Such systems are playing the key role in healthcare, finance, education, transportation, cybersecurity, and smart cities. Despite these advancements, the intelligent software systems are still facing numerous challenges like data quality, model selection, explainability, algorithmic bias, privacy concerns, security vulnerabilities, and ethical considerations, hindering their acceptance. This book explores the emerging trends and challenges in intelligent software systems development, highlighting recent technological advancements and their impact on software engineering practices along with the critical issues that must be addressed to ensure the successful adoption and sustainability of intelligent software solutions in the future.

Objective

The primary objectives of this book are to • Provide an up-to-date knowledge of the emerging trends, technologies, methodologies, and challenges associated with the development of Intelligent Software Systems. • Examine the evolving landscape of intelligent software systems with respect to industrial applications, and innovative development approaches. • Analyze the impact of emerging technologies of Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), Explainable AI (XAI), MLOps, Edge Intelligence, CV), and AI-assisted software engineering on the design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of intelligent software solutions. • Provide insights and strategies for developing trustworthy, efficient, robust, sustainable and responsible intelligent systems to researchers and practitioners. • Bridge the gap between traditional software engineering principles and modern AI-driven development practices. • Highlight existing research gaps, identify future research opportunities, and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration among scholars and practitioners.

Target Audience

As intelligent technologies are reshaping the development of Intelligent Software Systems so this book will be valuable to those who are interested in understanding the theoretical foundations along with their practical implications. The primary audience of this book includes: • Researchers from academia: Researchers working in the fields of Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence related disciplines will find open research challenges and opportunities. • Technology experts: They will be able to understand the emerging technologies and industry trends along with ethical, governance, and regulatory issues. • Organizations: Technology companies, government agencies and research & educational institutions will benefit from the guidance for implementing, governance, compliance of intelligent software solutions. • Anyone who is interested in knowing a multidisciplinary perspective on intelligent software development in an AI-driven world.
