Introduction

Entrepreneurship is increasingly enacted within — and shaped by — digital platforms. Rather than operating as independent, stand-alone ventures, many entrepreneurs now build, scale, and compete within complex digital infrastructures governed by powerful platform organizations such as Amazon, Apple, Alibaba, Meta Platforms, and Shopify. These platforms provide access to markets, customers, data, payment systems, logistics, and increasingly, artificial intelligence tools. At the same time, they impose rules, governance structures, and algorithmic mechanisms that shape visibility, competition, and value capture. The rise of digital entrepreneurial platforms represents a structural transformation in how opportunities are discovered, developed, and exploited. Platforms do not merely host entrepreneurial activity; they actively configure it. Algorithms rank products and content. Data analytics inform opportunity recognition. Interface design shapes customer interaction. Governance policies influence monetization and survival. As a result, entrepreneurial action is increasingly mediated by platform architectures that both enable and constrain. This volume explores three interconnected dimensions of this transformation: capabilities, opportunity processes, and performance implications.

Objective

This book seeks to advance a systematic and theoretically grounded understanding of how digital entrepreneurial platforms reshape the foundations of entrepreneurial action. While prior research has examined entrepreneurship and digital platforms as largely distinct domains, this volume integrates them to explain how platform infrastructures influence capability development, opportunity processes, and performance outcomes.

Target Audience

The book will be particularly impactful for: - Scholars developing theory at the intersection of entrepreneurship and digital platforms - Researchers conducting empirical studies of platform-based ventures - Doctoral students seeking to position research within emerging digital contexts - Policymakers navigating the complexities of platform governance and digital market regulation By combining theoretical integration with empirical and methodological advancement, the volume aims to become a key reference for those seeking to understand how entrepreneurial action unfolds within increasingly platform-organized economies.
