Introduction

The rapid rise of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is transforming higher education, particularly in how assessment, academic integrity and student learning are understood and practised. Traditional assessment approaches, often reliant on standardised tasks and detection technologies, are increasingly inadequate in addressing the complexities of AI-enabled learning environments. This edited volume responds to this urgent challenge by exploring how assessment can be redesigned to remain credible, inclusive and pedagogically meaningful. This book brings together international scholars and practitioners to examine how AI-resilient assessment design can support integrity, equity and authentic learning. It seeks to move beyond surveillance-based approaches and instead foreground design-led, ethical and student-centred practices.

Objective

This book aims to: 1. Advance theoretical and practical understanding of assessment design in the age of Generative AI 2. Explore how academic integrity can be embedded through inclusive and authentic assessment practices 3. Provide innovative, evidence-informed approaches that integrate AI as a learning tool rather than a threat 4. Contribute to interdisciplinary scholarship on AI, assessment, equity and pedagogy 5. Offer practical guidance and case studies to support educators, institutions and policymakers The volume will extend current research by bridging theory and practice, and by foregrounding issues of equity, inclusion and student partnership in AI-enabled assessment.

Target Audience

This book is intended for: 1. Academics, lecturers and researchers in higher education 2. Programme leaders, curriculum designers and academic developers 3. Institutional leaders and policymakers in teaching, learning and assessment 4. Researchers and postgraduate students in education, educational technology and assessment studies 5. Professionals involved in academic integrity, quality assurance and digital education It will particularly benefit those seeking to redesign assessment practices in response to Generative AI while maintaining academic standards, inclusivity and student engagement.
