Introduction

This edited volume provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary framework for understanding and addressing aquatic pollution within circular water economy systems, linking planetary health risks, livelihood impacts, and integrated water governance for climate‑resilient futures. The book is structured in four thematic parts: (i) conceptual foundations linking aquatic pollution, circular water economy, planetary health, and integrated water governance; (ii) pollution pathways and health risks, including toxicological impacts, waterborne diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and emerging contaminants; (iii) livelihood impacts on communities dependent on aquatic resources (fishing, farming, tourism) and socio‑economic vulnerabilities; and (iv) governance and policy innovations, including integrated water resource management (IWRM), circular economy regulations, transboundary water cooperation, and climate‑resilient infrastructure. Featuring case studies from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe, the book bridges environmental science, public health, economics, and governance. After publication, the book will also be submitted to Scopus and Web of Science for indexing. IGI Global has seen 90% of its books indexed in Scopus in recent years. Objective

This book intends to:

  • Synthesise current knowledge on aquatic pollution sources, pathways, and emerging contaminants, including the influence of climate change on pollution dynamics.
  • Examine the toxicological and public health impacts of water pollution, with a focus on climate‑sensitive waterborne diseases and antimicrobial resistance.
  • Explore circular water economy principles and the role of hydrological modelling in predicting pollutant transport, assessing climate impacts, and optimising resource recovery.
  • Analyse socio‑economic livelihood impacts on communities dependent on fishing, farming, and tourism, with an emphasis on climate vulnerability.
  • Evaluate governance mechanisms (IWRM, transboundary cooperation, policy innovations) that support climate‑resilient circular water systems.
  • Provide actionable recommendations aligned with UN SDGs 3, 6, 11, 12, 13, 14.

Target Audience

The primary audience includes researchers and postgraduate students in environmental science, public health, water resources management, circular economy, and climate adaptation. Secondary audiences include policymakers in environment, water, and health ministries; practitioners in international organisations and NGOs; professionals in water utilities, wastewater treatment, and environmental consulting; and community leaders working on water protection and public health. The book may also be adopted as a supplementary text for graduate courses in water security, environmental epidemiology, circular economy, and climate resilience.

Recommended Topics

The book will cover the following topics, including, but not limited to:

  • Aquatic pollution sources and pathways: industrial, agricultural, and domestic contaminants
  • Emerging contaminants in water systems: pharmaceuticals, microplastics, PFAS, and endocrine disruptors
  • Climate change and hydrological extremes: impacts of floods, droughts, and heatwaves on water quality and pollution transport
  • Hydrological modelling for pollution prediction: using AI, machine learning, GIS, and remote sensing to model the fate of pollutants in rivers, lakes, and coastal zones
  • Toxicological impacts of water pollution on human health
  • Waterborne diseases and antimicrobial resistance in aquatic environments (including climate‑sensitive disease dynamics)
  • Circular water economy: principles, technologies, and case studies
  • Wastewater treatment and resource recovery for circular systems
  • Livelihood impacts of aquatic pollution on fishing, farming, and tourism communities
  • Socio‑economic vulnerabilities and environmental justice in polluted water bodies
  • Integrated water resource management (IWRM) for pollution control (climate‑adaptive IWRM)
  • Transboundary water governance and cooperation for shared water bodies
  • Climate‑resilient water infrastructure and adaptation strategies
  • Policy innovations for circular water economy and pollution prevention
  • Monitoring and assessment tools for water quality and ecosystem health
  • Community‑based water governance and participatory approaches
  • Financing mechanisms for water pollution control and circular transitions

Submission Procedure

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before June 14, 2026, a chapter proposal of 1,000 to 2,000 words clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors will be notified by June 28, 2026 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines.Full chapters of a minimum of 10,000 words (word count includes references and related readings) are expected to be submitted by September 6, 2026, and all interested authors must consult the guidelines for manuscript submissions at https://www.igi-global.com/publish/contributor-resources/before-you-write/ prior to submission. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-anonymized review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.

Note: There are no submission or acceptance fees for manuscripts submitted to this book publication, Aquatic Pollution in Circular Water Economy Systems. All manuscripts are accepted based on a double-anonymized peer review editorial process.

All proposals should be submitted through the eEditorial Discovery® online submission manager.
