Dr. Monica Thiel presents at the Mustang Academic Conference

Can Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Empower Organizations?

Empowering Organizations through Corporate Social Responsibility Contributed by Dr. Monica Thiel, Tilburg University, The Netherlands

In presenting the title Empowering Organizations through Corporate Social Responsibility at the Mustang Academic Conference in Las Vegas, NV USA, Dr. Monica Thiel addressed how Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is central to the advancement of an organization through project development, in sourcing workers, sustainable employee environmental and social behaviors, and leadership for empowering organizations and new business-community collaboration. It is interesting to see how CSR environmental behaviors within an organization can truly transform the organization, and also the local community in which the company operates. Organizations that focus solely on economic development will decrease CSR behaviors in an organization and that could lead to increasing unethical norms in regular daily business transactions and processes. Focusing on the good, the bad, and the ugly, CSR can also reveal itself as a tool for corporate reputation management and branding that may result in zero social responsibility.

There is a growing number of published literature on CSR, resulting in a growing multitude of definitions and theories. This book shows how to navigate through vast CSR information within specific and contextual models, theories and cases. For example, innovative internal and external organizational processes of CSR can move beyond public relations and develop transparent and meaningful organizational behaviors for critical examination, and new CSR perspectives across industries and sectors. Although providing evidence of how companies can measure all 3 domains remains to be seen, investors and business leaders are increasingly acknowledging that CSR makes good business sense. Companies want to strive to sustain high economic, social, and environmental outcomes for competitive advantage and developing partnerships and collaboration with stakeholders and local communities.

This book is designed to invigorate and renew the business community, but also to make new considerations and innovative findings accessible to other academics and practitioners. Sharing and providing innovative CSR models and theories from broad and diverse disciplines makes this book a great learning tool for undergraduate and graduate students in any discipline. Some conference participants, especially within the finance and economics community, heeded the call to renew their business curriculum and to challenge their students to implement CSR into their studies and business practices.

Empowering Organizations through Corporate Social Responsibility, edited by scholars Dr. Ruth Wolf (Bar Ilan University, Israel), Dr. Theodora Issa (Curtin University, Australia) and Dr. Monica Thiel (Tilburg University, The Netherlands), addresses the implementation of businesses’ ethical standards in both emerging and advanced economies, interpreting the social impact of this issue in a global context. Highlighting case studies, interdisciplinary perspectives, and strategies in business management, this book is a pivotal reference source for academics, researchers, post-graduate students, and professionals concerned with the development of the business sector. Part of the Advances in Business Strategy and Competitive Advantage (ABSCA) Book Series, this title was recently selected for indexing by PsycINFO, an expansive abstracting and indexing database with more than 3 million records devoted to peer-reviewed literature in the behavioral sciences and mental health, making it an ideal discovery and linking tool for scholarly research in a host of disciplines.
