"Early Warning System and Adaptation Advice to Reduce Human Health Consequences of Extreme Weather Conditions and Air Pollution" offered for open access

How Pollution is Affecting Your Health in the Technology Age

IGI Global Editor Travels To Myanmar Last week, Beijing issued its first ever "red alert" for pollution, as city officials warned of dangerously high levels of smog lasting from Tuesday through Thursday. Following decades of unbridled economic growth, China is charged to confront these dramatically increasing levels of environmental degradation. Pollution and global climate change were also some of the major issues addressed in the recent UN climate change agreements. World leaders have come together to establish a guideline of principals and goals for countries to follow to reduce climate change.

Mounting environmental issues have caused a demand for systems that monitor health risks and provide timely alerts. Internet applications for weather and air pollution monitoring, as well as for providing health advice and issuing warnings, have been developed in regions around the world to protect our current and future inhabitants. Exposure to adverse weather conditions and high concentrations of air pollutants is associated with a wide range of acute and chronic health effects. Of particular risk are children, the elderly, and patients with existing chronic diseases.

State University of Novi Pazar scholars Dragan Bogdanovic and Konstansa Lazarevic have introduced a framework to combat the health consequences of pollution and reduce human exposure to adverse conditions. Their research, entitled “Early Warning System and Adaptation Advice to Reduce Human Health Consequences of Extreme Weather Conditions and Air Pollution,” discusses the development of a multi-site Internet service to provide the public with real time information about local weather and air quality. It proposes how weather and pollution can and may affect health, and how both the general population and sensitive population groups can protect their health during periods of extreme weather conditions or increased air pollution levels.

The system provides personalized health warnings and recommendations given separately for each AIQ and heat index or wind chill index value, for each sensitive population group, as well as for the general population. The project is currently implemented on the website of the Institute of Occupational Health Niš and will be offered to other healthcare institutions in Serbia. Evaluation of the system should enable redefinition of heat and wind chill indices and air pollution threshold values if necessary.
